This fall’s Yoobi Backpack Drive surpassed all our expectations, placing critically important school supplies in the hands of needy students nationwide.

Thank You for Helping Us Prepare a New Generation of Scholars

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, school supplies cost the average U.S. parent $114 per child each year. Because not every family can afford this expense, 91 percent of U.S. teachers purchase supplies for their classrooms with their own money, and more than half spend up to $200 each year to meet the needs of students at risk.

With school districts around the country continuing to strain their budgets, this problem will likely burden American children, parents and teachers for years to come.

Thankfully, credit unions have stepped up to assist.

This fall, we called on you to help us bring Yoobi Back-to-School Backpacks filled with supplies to hundreds of children whose families struggle financially. Because of your generosity, more than 1,300 students received everything they need to start the school year right.

Yoobi is a philanthropy very close to our hearts at CO-OP. A socially-driven school supply company, Yoobi understands that education is the path to success, and accordingly matches every backpack donated through our CO-OP Purpose program one-to-one through the Kids in Need Foundation.

In total, CO-OP client credit unions delivered 650 backpacks filled with supplies, along with financial literacy kits, to children in their local communities – with Yoobi donating an equal number of items to high-need elementary schools across the U.S. through the Kids in Need Foundation.

According to Jennie Gylock, marketing supervisor for Escanaba, Michigan-based Peninsula Federal Credit Union, “It was an amazing feeling to be able to help little ones go back to school with the things they need to be successful.”

“Our Leadership Team gravitated to this opportunity almost immediately for the team building aspect, in addition to community assistance opportunity,” said Greg Strizich, president/CEO of Helena, Montana-based Helena Community Credit Union. “I am very pleased to have CO-OP as a partner in supporting our mission as a credit union.”

Erica Waetjen Beach, vice president of marketing for Lake Forest, California-based Eagle Community Credit Union, adds, “We delivered the backpacks and kit today to the school/class that won and had a blast! What a great idea and partnership – keep them coming!”
